One Hundred and Fifty Years of Style and Elegance...
Historic Elmwood in St. Matthews, (LouisvilleKentucky) was built by Richard Herr in 1856 on a three hundred acre tract. The Herr family originally came to Kentucky as land surveyors and explorers in 1779. Settling in the St. Mathews/Louisville area, they secured title to thousands of acres. In the following decades the Herr family became prominent plantation owners. The second generation Herr's built six-mansions in the St. Matthews/Louisville area. Elmwood Mansion is one of four remaining Herr-mansions.
The great Louisville, Kentucky antebellum mansion that is Elmwood received one of its many honors in 2007. Bellarmine University selected Elmwood Mansion as the 2007 Designers' Show House. Twenty-six premier Louisville area interior design professionals selected a room, a hall or a foyer and restored their designated space using their design skill and art to produce absolutely spectacular living spaces. Many thousand Show House patrons toured Elmwood in September 2007, the door proceeds funding Bellarmine University scholarship programs.
The first floor of Elmwood Mansion has the master front door and hallway, library, living room, dining room, tavern room, kitchen, two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The twelve and fourteen foot ceilings of the first floor have beautiful moldings. The floor-to-ceiling windows flood the rooms with ambient light. The gas fireplaces provide warmth and comfort in the fall and winter seasons. The kitchen highlights exposed ceiling beams and the good looking patina of four-exposed brick walls. The massive brass and crystal chandeliers, the hand carved fireplace mantles, and the period furniture make each room spectacular.
The Colonel and Margaret Sue welcome you to Elmwood Mansion, their family home.
